Local Shops
Tideswell is very lucky to have a thriving retail sector - it has a butcher and a baker, but sadly now lacks the candlestick maker - it also has a florist, two genral stores, greengrocer and delicatessen.
Having been a thriving market village in it's time - Market Square used to house the local Cattle Market until the turn of the 20th century - it catered for all the local viallges with a profusion of small shops and businesses.
It is thought that threw time there have been over 80 shops residing within Tideswell but most, like the public houses have been converted back to residential properties - there were cycle shops; wool shops, milliners, boot and shoe repairers - everything a villager would need in close proximity.
with the improvement in transport, however, villages became less remote and other villages and towns became more accessible, causing loss of trade for these local retailers. Tideswell villagers still use their local shops and it is hoped that with projects such as
Taste Tideswell, which promotes local produce that they will continue to do so, as these facilities create the feeling that it is a real village, not one that only caters to the tourist trade.
The shops listed in this section all relish the extra business that tourism brings to them, and do supply a fine array of goods for sale, but equally, the fact that they need business all year round, they rely heavily on local support. In turn the locals rely on local traders to supply the goods and services that are required in day to day life.
