Tideswell (known locally as 'Tidza') is one of the oldest centres in the central
Peak District. Granted a charter for a market in 1251, it has thrived as a market town until relatively recently. Initially the site of the 'Great Courts' of the Royal Forest of the Peak, dating back to Edward I, the village still has a few of the buildings along the main street with foundations that date back to this period. It is now famed for it's medieval and magnificent 14th-century church, known locally as 'The Cathedral of the Peak'
Being well worth a visit, it is close to
Bakewell,
Buxton and on the main road through the Peaks that takes you west towards Manchester, which makes it an ideal stopping point for
Peak District visitors.
