AFTER three years of fundraising and hard work the people of Litton braved the weekend rain to celebrate the opening of the new village play ground.
A group of five Litton mums got together to form PLAY (Playground for Litton's Active Youth) in 2007 and have worked tirelessly ever since to raise more than £60,000 for the facility that was opened by the village children on Saturday.
The idea started when a playground was included in the Litton parish plan that was published when the village had just two swings for children to play on.
Julie Nash, one of the mums from PLAY, said: "Everything went according to plan although the weather was very rainy after all the nice weather we had the week before.
"The village children cut the ribbon and then they all raced in and had a go on every piece of equipment. It was fabulous, the thing that really did it for me was seeing all the kids on the pod swing. I remember seeing the photograph of children on that swing in the brochure and it was fabulous to see ours using it on Saturday."
The playground is designed for all ages and also includes a small sensory garden as well as the equipment.
PLAY, that also counts Karen Gittins, Bridget Weston, Jane Cooper and Trish Oscroft among its membership, raised £10,000 locally through a race night, safari supper and a Pimms, Pictures and Promises Evening.
They also attained £6,000 in grants and £49,839 from the Big Lottery fund.
The ladies served a complimentary hog-roast, barbecue and champagne to the villagers on Saturday by way of thanking them for their support.
